As your Halloween articulation therapy sessions creep closer, it’s the perfect time to introduce your students to the hierarchy of speech in a fun and spooky way! I absolutely love articulation ladders because they help students see the different levels of speech practice. October is also the perfect time to check in on your little goblins and ghouls—an articulation ladder makes it super easy to figure out where each student is on the speech hierarchy while keeping things lighthearted and engaging. They’re the perfect Halloween speech therapy activity for your lesson plans!

Students can color their haunted houses and then cut them out, giving them a fun way to practice fine motor skills while working on their speech goals.

What is an Articulation Ladder?
An articulation ladder is a fun visual that shows the different levels of speech. At the very bottom, students begin with isolation—saying the sound all by itself. Next comes the syllable level, where a vowel is added to the target sound. From there, students climb to the word level, then the phrase level, and on to the sentence level. The ladder doesn’t stop there—it continues upward to reading, conversation, and generalization!
An articulation ladder makes it easy for students to actually see the speech hierarchy, while giving them a motivating, hands-on way to track their progress.

Isolation Level
The first step on the articulation ladder is the sound level. At this stage, students focus on producing the phoneme all by itself—for example, the /k/ sound or the /l/ sound. This level is supported by a visual cue that shows students how to position their articulators correctly to make the sound.
Syllable Level
Once students are comfortable with the sound by itself, they move on to the syllable level. Here, the target sound is paired with a vowel. This helps students begin blending the sound into more natural speech. You can work on the sound in the initial position or final position. Students can either say the consonant sound first or second!
No time for scissors?! These can also be used as fun coloring sheets! Whether you work with younger students or elementary students, this activity will make your Halloween speech therapy sessions memorable and meaningful! They’re also great for sending home for additional practice. Parents will love the strong visuals and the ease of this super simple craft.
Word Level
The next step on the articulation ladder is the word level! At this stage, students practice putting their target sound into complete words. Once they can successfully say the sound in isolation and blend it with vowels at the syllable level, they’re ready to move on to words. For this activity, I included five Halloween-themed words. I love incorporating seasonal vocabulary into articulation therapy whenever possible—it keeps practice fun, engaging, and connected to what students are excited about this time of year! Phrase Level
At this level, students are given 10 total two-word phrases featuring two different Halloween-themed vocabulary words! These often include a pronoun or adjective + the target word. These phrases help ease students into the next level of speech and will help them build confidence in their ability to produce their speech sounds!
Sentence Level
When students climb to the very top of the ladder, they’ll practice a silly, sound-loaded sentence! Each rung of the ladder features different target words, so none are repeated. This gives students maximum exposure to a wide variety of vocabulary and plenty of opportunities to practice their speech sounds.
Halloween Articulation Activities
This activity can also be used as an interactive notebook project! Simply have students place glue under the top of the haunted house and attach it inside their notebooks (or on a loose-leaf sheet of paper). Underneath, they can write their own word targets, create phrases, or even craft full sentences. For students who aren’t writing yet, drawing their word targets is a great option. These crafts also make excellent assessment tools. During therapy, you can quickly see where a student is on the articulation ladder—and students can even use the visual to assess themselves!
I think these articulation ladder crafts are also perfect to send home for homework! The visual cue at the first rung of the ladder will be helpful for students and parents as they practice at home! This Halloween craft also doubles as a simple word list, giving students seasonally relevant vocabulary to practice.
