Halloween speech therapy activities are some of my absolute favorites! From 12-foot skeletons to glowing jack-o’-lanterns, I can’t get enough of the Halloween hoopla and I love weaving all that festive fun into October’s speech therapy sessions. Tips for Planning Halloween Speech Therapy Sessions
Halloween is such a magical time of year, but it can also feel a little overwhelming with so many fun ideas floating around! When planning your Halloween speech therapy sessions, I recommend keeping things simple and intentional. Choose a few Halloween themes to revisit throughout October—whether it’s pumpkins, bats, spiders, or black cats—and weave those ideas into your activities. Not only will this save you time, but it also builds repetition that helps your students retain new skills and Halloween vocabulary words.
- Keep it no prep when you can. October is busy enough without hours of planning! Print-and-go activities are your best friend.
- Revisit favorite books. Reading Halloween stories again and again boosts comprehension, vocabulary, and confidence!
- Funnel your themes. Start with a broad Halloween theme and then niche it down each week (for example: week 1 = Halloween, week 2 = mummies, week 3 = monsters, week 4 = witches).
- Consider cultural differences. Depending on your school and caseload, you may want to stick with themes that have a spooky element but aren’t directly tied to Halloween—such as spiders, bats, or pumpkins.

Halloween Themes
The Monster Mash lives in my head rent free—haha! I’m honestly obsessed with Halloween and spooky creatures, and there are so many amazing themes to explore in October, from haunted houses to zombies. I absolutely love a good theme, so this section is a round-up of all the Halloween ideas I’ve curated over the years. Please don’t feel overwhelmed—think of this as inspiration! Pick a couple to use this October, then save the rest for future Halloweens. I’ve been creating Halloween materials since 2014, so buckle up—you’re in for some treats, haha!
One of my favorite planning tricks is what I call a “theme funnel.” I start with a broad theme and then get more and more specific each week. For example, I might kick off October with a Haunted House theme and then narrow it down by introducing the spooky creatures that live inside as Halloween gets closer!
Haunted House Themed Speech Therapy
Nothing screams spooky season more than a haunted house! This theme is always a student favorite because it’s just the right mix of fun and fright. It’s also perfect for targeting skills like sequencing, describing, and WH- questions while keeping your students engaged.

A witch theme is a great way to brew up fun in the speech room! Witches are one of the most popular Halloween costumes, making them a festive choice that’s spooky without being too scary. You can grab some small cauldrons from the Dollar Spot or even bring in an old broomstick to make this theme come alive for your students. You can also grab a larger cauldron to make a fun sensory bin!
Room on the Broom
Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson is hands-down my favorite Halloween picture book to use in speech therapy! It can be used to target so many different goals including basic concepts, answering WH questions, rhyming, sequencing, story grammar, and more! Younger students and older children alike enjoy this story!

It’s Raining Bats and Frogs
