The presidential election is coming up, so I’ve been thinking about some of my favorite Election Day picture books for the elementary classroom and language therapy!

Grace for President by Kelly DiPucchio is hands-down my favorite! When Grace Campbell’s teacher unveiled a new poster featuring all of the U.S. Presidents, she is shocked to discover that they were all men! She decides right then that she wants to become president! Her teacher organizes a school election and then Grace works hard to win over her classmates. This book does a great job explaining the electoral college and the voting process!
There are so many ways you can use this book to tackle speech and language skills!
- Articulation – This book is loaded with /r/ blends (Grace, president, presidential, promises, presentation, etc).
- Compare/Contrast – Talk about the similarities and differences between Grace and her opponent Thomas.
- Story Elements – This book is a great way to take a deep dive into characters and character traits!
- Social Skills – Discuss the importance of kindness and how Grace displayed kindness.
- Vocabulary – This book is rich in Election Day vocabulary (electoral college, rallies, campaign, speeches, etc)!

I love literature lap books! They’re fun and memorable classroom projects and they’re super versatile. All of these activities can also be used in a reading notebook or interactive language notebook if you decide not to create the lap book (or they can even stand alone). It includes so many different activities!
There is also a flip book companion that can be included inside the lap book or it can stand alone! It addresses comparing/contrasting, sequencing, writing, and comprehension!

I recommend using this book as a whole group read aloud and then having students work on this project throughout the week either as a whole group or in literacy centers. If you’re an SLP, you can opt to use this book over the course of several weeks!
