I have a confession to make, at the beginning of my career, I used to balk at the idea of making crafts in my speech therapy sessions. They looked so cute on Pinterest, but the idea of gathering all of the materials made me feel overwhelmed. I didn’t want to add to my already full plate. That’s why, many years later I created NO PREP articulation crafts! I designed these to save time, because the less time we spend planning and prepping, the more time we have to tackle evaluation reports, Medicaid billing, and IEP paperwork. Life as an SLP is super busy, but we can still have fun! Today, let’s explore my K Articulation Crafts packet!
K Sound Articulation Crafts
Let’s check out the K sound packet (also in a bundle with all the speech sounds and blends). These can also be found in The Speech is Sweet Club! The Speech is Sweet Club is a membership designed for SLPs and it provides ALL ACCESS to my materials (I’ve created nearly 700 resources and fun games over the years)!
These crafts are shaped like target words! Your speech therapy students will get a kick out of this! There are 25 crafts in total. You’ll find 10 crafts that represent the k sound in the initial position, 10 in the final position, and 5 that represents the medial position! That’s a lot of /k/ words! These fun crafts will also keep your students engaged as they practice their articulation skills. Hands-on activities such as crafts are especially great for large speech therapy groups, as they promote on-task behavior as a student waits for their turn to do repetitive drills!
Your articulation students will be so proud to take these home to show-off to their parents and family members! They’re super great for home practice too! Whether you’re a school-based speech therapist or in practice practice, these crafts will help you create variety in your lesson plans and allow you to tackle speech sounds in a variety of different ways.
If you have a child with an articulation disorder, these crafts can be a great way to work on the k sound at home during school breaks! If you are unable to elicit the correct pronunciation of the /k/ sound, I would recommend to take a break and just model the words for your child, because we don’t want children to practice incorrectly.
Quick Tip for /k/ Production
One trick you can try to help elicit the correct production of the sound is to use a tongue depressor or a small lollipop (like the dum-dum brand) and hold down the tip of the tongue to help your child focus on using the back of their tongue. This is one of my go-to strategies! The k sound (a voiceless velar stop) is one of my favorite sounds to work on and it’s so rewarding once a child starts to gain awareness of their articulators (lips, tongue tip, back of the tongue, upper teeth, alveolar ridge, soft palate, front of the mouth, etc)! Once you can elicit an accurate production of /k/, then it’s go-time! Get as many repetitions as possible and these crafts are a great way to help make articulation practice fun!
K Initial Position Words
The initial position crafts include: koala, cake, camera, can, key, cow, castle, cone, cap, and cup.
In addition to the shaped craft templates, you will also receive 6 pages of k word lists! These word lists feature the circular word targets you see on the crafts. They’re designed to be cut out and glued onto the craft. There are word lists that target the initial, medial, and final positions of words separately and three word lists that feature a combination of all the word positions! Every word list contains 25 words, so there is a lot of variety! The target word pages also feature visual cues that show that /k/ is a sound made in the back of the mouth.
You can even use the words for other crafts you may want to create too, like paper plate crafts!
K Medial Position Words
The medial position crafts include: taco, popcorn, unicorn, rocket, and cookie jar.
K Final Position Words
The final position crafts include: sock, cupcake, truck, bank, book, lock, tank, milk, duck, and cook!
These crafts are engaging and will ensure 100+ repetitions!
