Need CH sound speech therapy crafts?! I have to be honest, I used to avoid crafts at the beginning of my career as a speech therapist! The cute activities I found on Pinterest looked so fun, but the thought of running to Michael’s to gather supplies and prepping all of the materials, made my head spin. I just didn’t want to add anything extra onto my plate. That’s why I later created NO PREP speech therapy crafts! I designed these to save time, because less prep means more time to tackle the stack of paperwork that comes with being a busy SLP! Today, let’s check out my CH Sound Articulation Crafts packet!

CH Sound Speech Therapy Crafts

These crafts are shaped like target words! Your speech therapy students will love them! There are 25 crafts in total. You’ll find 10 crafts that represent the ch sound in the initial position, 10 in the final position, and 5 that represents the medial position! That’s a lot of /ch/ words! These fun crafts will also keep your students engaged as they practice their articulation skills. Hands-on activities such as crafts are especially great for large speech therapy groups, as they promote on-task behavior as a student waits for their turn to do repetitive drills!

Your articulation students will be so proud to take these home to show-off to their parents and family members! They’re super great for home practice too! Whether you’re a school-based speech therapist or in practice practice, these crafts will help you create variety in your lesson plans and allow you to tackle speech sounds in a variety of different ways.

If you have a child with an articulation disorder, these crafts can be a great way to work on the ch sound at home during school breaks! If you are unable to elicit the correct pronunciation of the /ch/ sound, I would recommend to take a break and just model the words for your child, because we don’t want children to practice incorrectly.

All About /ch/ Production

The CH sound is considered an affricate, because it combines a stop consonant (/t/) with a fricative (/sh/) and it’s a later developing sound. It’s voiceless, meaning that the vocal folds/vocal cords do not vibrate while it’s being produce. In order to produce /ch/, you may have to explicitly teach kids what to do with their articulators (tongue, teeth, lips, etc)! First, the lips must be rounded and the middle of the tongue has to touch the bumpy part of the roof of the mouth or just behind it (alveolar ridge) and the front teeth have to be close together. I like calling /ch/ the choo choo sound, because it sounds like a train! Kid friendly terminology can help make learning about speech sounds fun! Once you can elicit an accurate production of /ch/, then it’s go-time! Get as many repetitions as possible and these crafts are a great way to help make articulation practice fun!

CH Sound Speech Therapy Quick Tips

Here are two tips to make the CH sound super memorable:

Implement play-based therapy! Bring in a toy train and see if students can mimic “choo-choo.”
Get up and dance the “cha-cha-cha” and have students practicing saying “cha-cha-cha” while they do the dance!
Make sure the student can produce /t/ and /sh/ separately. If not, you will need to work on those sounds first.
Remind students to let out a quick burst of air! It’s also a good idea to have students put their hand in front of their mouths to feel the burst of air!
Use tactile cues to help with tongue placement – place a tongue depressor on the child’s alveolar ridge or a dum-dum lollipop to show students where to place their tongue tip.
For students who need more explicit instruction, bust out the mouth model and teach mouth anatomy! Learning about the tongue (tip of the tongue, back of the tongue, sides of the tongue), front teeth, back teeth, hard palate, soft palate, alveolar ridge, etc can be very helpful, especially when you need to provide very specific instructions for tongue placement.

CH Initial Position Words

In addition to the shaped craft templates, you will also receive 6 pages of ch word lists! These word lists feature the circular word targets you see on the crafts. They’re designed to be cut out and glued onto the craft. There are word lists that target the initial, medial, and final positions of words separately and three word lists that feature a combination of all the word positions! Every word list contains 25 words, so there is a lot of variety! The target word pages also feature visual cues that show how the /ch/ sound is made.

You can even use the words for other crafts you may want to create too, like paper plate crafts! There are truly so many fun activities you can do with the word lists alone!

The initial position crafts include a variety of different words: chair, chips, chest, cheeseburger, chocolate, chalkboard, chimp, chicken, cheese, and chimney.

CH Medial Position Words

The medial position crafts include: ketchup, beach ball, pitcher, inchworm, and armchair.

These cute crafts are great to use with younger and older kids alike. They’re a great way to to work on articulation at a variety of levels of speech, such as the word level, phrase level, or sentence level. When a student has correct production at the word level, then have them put the word into a phrase or sentence!

CH Final Position Words

Crafts that address the final position of words include: lunch, hatch, bench, couch, arch, launch, beach, pouch, sandwich, and peach!

These final words crafts are engaging and will ensure 100+ repetitions, which makes for some very effective speech therapy!
