Wild About Books Wednesday has returned just in time for the Halloween season! It’s been awhile since Wild About Books Wednesday has been a weekly occurrence! If you’re not familiar with this blog series, it’s when I discuss a specific book and share ways that it can be used to enhance speech/language. I have four fun spooky books planned out for the month of October. I’m super excited to share some ideas and freebies with you this month! I’m kicking it all off with (aff. link) The Night Before Halloween by Natasha Wing! This series is the absolute cutest.
I’m a huge fan of book series. They’re a fun way to help students build background knowledge. It’s always super helpful when a student is familiar with a character or a sequence of events. This little book follows that same general outline as The Night Before Valentine’s Day or The Night Before Easter.
There are many goals that you can target with this book! Here are just a few:
1) Rhyming – This book is written with a sweet little rhyme scheme. It’s perfect for students who may be struggling with phonological awareness skills or to introduce students to rhyming.
2) WH Questions – I made “A Dab of Comprehension” sheet for this book! You can use it to practice some simple WH questions! Students just use a bingo dauber or marker to color in the circle after they have answered the question.
3) Executive Functioning – The monsters in this book plan a Halloween party! You can discuss how they planned their party and students can plan their own party! I whipped up a quick sheet that you can use with your students!
4) Describing – Students can describe all the Halloween costumes that they see in the book!
